In my few years on this earth I’ve been privileged to have grown up in the early days of Hip Hop, and  got to hear some of the greatest music ever made, from T-la-Rock “it’s yours” to Nas’s “Rewind” and not just Hip Hop but the R&B of the 80’s and 90’s transformed the entire industry, like Michel Jackson’s entire “Off The Wall” album and R. Kelly’s 12 Play -SMFH.

I spent a few years in the industry during my teenage and young adult years, and while my love for the game didn’t last; my love for the music is eternal. So in the spirit of this great music, each week I will be bringing you my songs of the week, this will consist of music from the late 70’s, 80’s and early 00’s. I think most will agree with my picks but if not, leave a comment below with some suggestions and I’ll give it a listen to see if it makes the cut. Peace

This Weeks Picks

I feel great about my picks for this week because they mesmerized me when I heard them and they still do till this day. So for my Hip Hop pick it’s going to have to me the aforementioned “It’s Yours” by t-La-Rock. This song didn’t just stimulate my mind with the intelligent lyrics (what happened to that in Hip Hop) and the beat was a classic for break dancing, if that song was played during a battle I would go crazy on the vinyl tile floor (or refrigerator cardboard box), back spin, head spin, and my finish was a suicide -for those that don’t know it’s a front flip with no hands and you land flat on your back -ILLL!

Now my R&B pick has similar reasons for it being my pick as my Hip Hop pick, just subtract the break dancing, and replace the word mesmerized with stimulated, and there you are. The song is “Forever My Lady” by JODECI. This song is probably responsible for every child made in in 1991, and it ushered in one of the first R&B groups with a bad boy Hip Hop attitude and persona, so dudes didn’t feel as awkward listing to JODECI as say, Prince.
